Important Notice: Upcoming Changes to Washington State Driver Licensing Requirements
Sueño Driving School keeps students, parents, and our community informed about new Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) requirements.
Washington State is introducing important changes to driver licensing requirements under Engrossed Substitute House Bill (ESHB) 1878: Improving Young Driver Safety.
These changes are designed to improve roadway safety, strengthen driver education, and better prepare young drivers to recognize hazards, make responsible decisions, and safely share the road with others.
At Sueño Driving School, we are committed to keeping our students, parents, and community informed about these new requirements.
Mandatory Work Zone and First Responder Safety Course
Beginning November 1, 2026, individuals under 25 years of age applying for their first Washington State driver's license must successfully complete a new online Work Zone and First Responder Safety Course.
Important: This course is a separate DOL requirement and does not replace other required driver education or licensing examinations.
Expanded Driver Education Requirements
Washington State will gradually expand mandatory driver education requirements to include young adults, beginning at 18 years of age, who previously could obtain a driver's license without completing an approved driver training program.
| Effective Date | Driver Education Required For |
|---|---|
| January 1, 2027 | First time applicants age 18 |
| January 1, 2028 | First time applicants ages 18 to 19 |
| January 1, 2029 | First time applicants ages 18 to 20 |
| January 1, 2030 | First time applicants ages 18 to 21 |
Requirements apply to individuals seeking their first driver's license, subject to applicable DOL exemptions and implementation rules.
Our Commitment to Roadway Safety
At Sueño Driving School, we believe driver education is more than learning how to operate a motor vehicle. It is about developing the knowledge, awareness, judgment, and responsibility necessary to become a safe driver for life.
Our goal is not simply to help students obtain a driver's license; it is to prepare them to become safe, confident, and responsible drivers.
